Forensic Nursing Programs

Forensic Nursing Programs Combine Health Care With Law Enforcement.

Populations around the world are creating new challenges for local, state and federal governments, especially when it comes to crime. forensic nursing programs serve different aspects of the community by training individuals to treat violent crime victims, as well as to act as clinical detectives and crime scene investigators that help control the negative impact that crime has on a community. forensic nursing programs give students the tools they need to help patients recover from the emotional and physical experiences of crime and they protect their rights in the process. forensic nursing programs prepare nurses mentally, so they can identify and confront extreme human behavior. Court systems are relying on forensic nursing programs to educate nurses in the art of recognizing, collecting and preserving evidence, while treating victims of violent crimes. forensic nursing programs produce qualified crime examiners who work with hospital staff in several different areas.

Nurses who have completed forensic nursing programs pursue careers in correctional nursing, sexual assault nursing, and as legal nurse consultants. forensic nursing programs also train nurses in gerontology specialization and as nurse corner/ death investigators. Forensic nurses are also found in hospital emergency rooms. They examine evidence before it is contaminated by normal treatment.forensic nursing programs include courses in collecting delicate evidence, as well as catering to the needs of the victim.

All evidence is extremely time-sensitive, so forensic nursing programs explain the proper procedures for collecting evidence with the 72 hour window, without causing the patient any additional trauma. In order to qualify for a forensic nursing program you must be an RN and most forensic nurses earn a MSN before entering the workplace. forensic nursing programs give nurses the opportunity to increase their earning potential. The starting wage for a forensic nurse is around $26 an hour and that can increase to $100 an hour depending on the specialty and experience.
